Bembidion octomaculatum (Goeze) (Carabidae) rediscovered in Surrey after 142 years

On 16 May 2017 I visited some marshy meadows near Jacob's Well, Guildford, between the River Wey and the industrial estate at Slyfield (TQ006526). These rough grazing meadows can be very wet and on previous occasions have proved treacherous even to the wellington-booted foot. But that May had been very dry and many usually inaccessible areas were easily assailable. The areas of damp but drying mud were alive with the usual myriad of madly rushing carabids. Amongst a sample selection that I collected I was pleased to find numerous specimens of Bembidion octomaculatum (Goeze). The beetle was also present on a return visit on 5 June 2017.
