Cis fagi Waltl (Ciidae) new to Argyllshire

Cis fagi Waltl has a fairly restricted distribution in Britain due to its requirement for large girth oaks. The larvae develop in the mycelium of the heartwood decay fungus Laetiporus sulphureus and perhaps other fungi species (Alexander, 2002). In Scotland it has only been reported from the Clyde Valley Oakwoods of Lanarkshire (VC 77) and the island of Arran (VC 100) (Crowson, 1962), and so its discovery in Argyllshire (VC 98) extends its known British distribution northwards. A single adult Cis was observed on the cut face of a large dead oak in Cormonachan Community Woodlands near Goilhead on the Cowal peninsula (NS1997) 13.ix2017. The specimen was retained for later examination and proved to be C. fagi.
