For many years sugarcane was regarded as a single product crop viz., sugar and manufacturing of allied products was a compulsion rather than a necessity and by products were lavishly consumed during processing of cane so as to ward off their polluting effects on the environments. However, reasearch and experience accumulated in many countries over several years have shown the benefits that could be realized. It is now recognized that each sugar unit should be converted into integrated sugar complexto produce sugar, alcohol, paper and a host of other value added down steam products and also to produce power for its command area.
