BlueScope building for the future

BlueScope Steel has been on a spending spree over the past few months, making a string of modest acquisitions that are expected to spur the company back to recovery. Just recently it received the green light from Australia's competition watchdog to acquire the OneSteel Sheet and Coil business from Arrium. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) said the A$23 M purchase could go through on condition BlueScope sells its existing sheet and coil assets in Western Australia to Melbourne-based Selection Steel. One of the fears of the regulatory authority is that BlueScope's acquisition of OneSteel would remove competition in Western Australia where the two companies are the sole distributors of sheet and coil products.
