Screening of sugarcane clones/varieties against smut disease (Ustilago scitaminea sydow)

A field experiment was laid out to screen the sugarcane genotypes for their resistance to smut disease under artificial epiphytotic conditions. Among the 39 sugarcane genotypes tested, five clones (79 R 207, 88 R 31, 89 R 63, CO 91005 and CO 91013) remained resistant (R): Three clones Co 91006, Co 91015 and 91 R 66 as moderately resistant (MR); Four clones (83 R 23, 88 R 13, 90 R 271 and CO 91002) reacted as moderately susceptible (MS); two clones, 90 R 5 and 90 R 353 reacted as susceptible (S) andthe remaining 25 entries were observed to be highly susceptible (HS) with the percent smut infection ranging from 33.4 (Co 91019) to 94.7 (86 A 146).
