EFSA rejects Madeira GMO-free bid

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded that no new scientific evidence was presented to justify a bid by the Portuguese autonomous region, Madeira, to declare itself free of genetically modified organisms. Portugal notified the European Commission last year of Madeira's draft decree on GMOs {Agrow No 580, p 19). Its submission was forwarded to the EFSA for assessment.
