EU Health and Consumers Commissioner John Dalli has defended his science-based approach to genetically modified crops to members of the European Parliament. Mr Dalli stressed that there was no reason to delay GMO authorisations if the scientific assessment had concluded that the legal safety requirements had been fulfilled. He was answering questions from MEPs in the Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee this month. A key topic was his recent approval of the cultivation of BASF's GM Amflora potato, the first cultivation approval in the EU for 12 years (Agrow No 587, p12).
