Bayer loses fourth US rice suit

A US court has ordered Bayer CropScience to pay 14 farmers a total of some $48 million over losses due to rice contamination with an unregistered genetically modified line. A jury at the Lonoke County Circuit Court in Arkansas awarded compensatory damages of some $6 million and punitive damages of $42 million. The case concerned rice contaminated with Bayer's glufosinate-tolerant LLRICE601 line. Three previous cases resulted in awards totalling some $4.5 million (Agrow Ho 588, p 15).
