The UK National Farmers' Union(NFU)is "pleased" that the government's Treasury maintained its position on the voluntary initiative(VI)as a "positive alternative to a pesticides tax" in the 2004 Budget in March. The schemes in the VI are aimed at the responsible use of pesticides and are delivering key environmental benefits that would not be delivered by a tax,the NFU points out. However, the Treasury warns that it is still reviewing options for a tax, should the VI fail to deliver the required environmental benefits within a reasonable timescale.
