MEPs seek amended MRL rules

The European Parliament's Environment Committee is considering amendments aimed at improving the European Commission's proposals to harmonise legislation on pesticide maximum residue limits(MRLs-Agrow No 434,p 9).A draft report,prepared for the Committee by UK MEP Robert Sturdy,suggests 38 amendments designed to clarify issues relating to:fees for evaluation work;cases where data may be lacking,such as for minor crops;compliance with existing rules on pesticide registration;and the roles of EU and national authorities.The Committee is due to finalise the report by the end of February,in preparation for a Parliamentary vote in March.
