Brazil's Ministry of Agrarian Development at least partly blames the use of genetically modified crops for the surging emergence of corn earworms {Helicoverpa armigera). The rising incidence of the pest has led to devastating losses in soybean and cotton areas in the country {Agrow passim). "Due to poor practice such as the excessive use of pesticides and insect-resistant Bt GM crops, the incidence of corn earworms has grown," the Ministry's website claims.
