Preliminary results of the first quarter of 2004 showed that approximately 900 ths, tons of steaming coal for the total amount exceeding USD 28 mn was exported from Ukraine, This figure exceeds corresponding indices of 2003 by 1.6 times in terms of quantity and by more than three quarters in terms of value in the period under review. At the same time, considerable reduction of steaming coal import took place in the reviewed period from 810 ths. tons over January-March 2003 down to approximately 110 ths. tons in the first quarter of 2004. Average prices of steaming coal export from Ukraine in the first quarter of 2004 increased by roughly 16-17 percent if compared with the average price of the previous year period constituting herewith roughly USD/MT 35 against USD/MT 30 in 2003. Geographical pattern of steaming coal export in the period under review practically did not change in terms of quantity, while modified in terms of market players. Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Moldova were the main consumers of Ukrainian steaming coal in the first quarter of 2004. Approximately 75 percent of the total export was destined to these countries.
