EFSA given more time for 'low-risk' ai reviews

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has been given more time to complete its evaluation work on "low-risk" active ingredients that were part of the fourth round of the EU review of existing ais. In a bid to speed up the review in 2007, the European Commission allowed such ais to be re-registered without the EFSA having to issue a formal opinion first [Agrow No 525, p 8). Instead, the EFSA was given until December 31st 2010 to deliver its opinions on these ais. However, given the number of ais concerned, the Commission has decided to extend this deadline by two years to December 31st 2012.
