A US court has ordered Bayer CropScience to pay a rice farmer some $500,000 over losses due to contamination with unregistered genetically modified glufosinate-tolerant rice. The case was heard in the US District Court in St Louis. It is the fifth defeat for Bayer in a series of lawsuits over GM rice contamination in 2005/06. Awards in the previous four cases amounted to some $52 million [Agrow No 590, p 27). The company faces around 500 lawsuits.
