Coping with symptoms of depression - a mixed-methods study among older people with cancer living in nursing homes

Background and purpose: Knowledge about mixed-methods perspectives that examine symptoms of depression and sense of coherence among cognitively intact nursing home residents with cancer is scarce. We aimed to investigate symptoms of depression and sense of coherence among nursing home residents who are cognitively intact and have cancer. Methods: We used a quantitatively driven mixed-methods design with sequential supplementary qualitative components. The quantitative component comprised face-to-face interviews of 60 nursing home residents (>65 years) using the Geriatric Depression Scale and Sense of Coherence Scale. The supplementary psychosocial component comprised qualitative research interviews about experiences related to depression with 9 respondents from the same cohort.
