How do older men and women cope with the physical changes and limitations caused by cancer? A qualitative study into the experiences of older men with prostate cancer and older women with breast cancer

Background: Breast cancer and especially prostate cancer are most often diagnosed in older patients. However, there is a lack of information on the experiences of older patients with having cancer and their coping with the physical changes. Aims: Our research program aims for insights in these experiences in order to improve psychosocial support. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 patients with breast cancer and 22 patients with prostate cancer (70+) in the Netherlands who had completed active cancer treatment. Conventional content analysis of the interview transcripts was used to delineate categories and themes.
