Response surface designs (RSDs) are constructed similar to that of central composite designs (CCDs). While RSDs are available for accommodating qualitative factors, there are situations where both qualitative and quantitative variables are present. A structured method is developed of constructing easy-to-use and cost-efficient RSDs that are useful for modeling and optimization of the experiments asymmetric in some qualitative and quantitative factors with different levels. The proposed method is demonstrated taking different experimental situations with varying number of factors. A competency analysis is performed to show that the proposed rotatable RSD is an economical alternative to the replicated CCD with competitive modeling and optimization performance. The structural and prediction properties make the proposed RSDs a good alternative to the known RSDs.
