Field experiments were conducted to study the effect of soil application of peptone and oxygenated peptone on organically grown chickpea (Cicer arietinum L. cv. Vijay). Soil was amended organically using peptone and oxygenated peptone under organic farming condition. Peptone treatment showed upper hand as compared to oxygenated peptone in total carbohydrates, polyphenols, proline and polyphenol oxidase activity. On the other hand, soil application of oxygenated peptone led to more enhancements in parameters like soluble proteins, total free amino acids, DNA and RNA content and activity of enzymes like catalase, peroxidase, IAA oxidase, nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase. The overall picture shows that both peptone and oxygenated peptone were useful to enhance the biochemical constituents and enzyme activity of the foliage. Oxygenated peptone is more useful in this respect.
