Syngenta asks EU to retract neonicotinoid suspension plan

Syngenta has requested the European Commission to retract its proposal to restrict the use of neonicotinoid insecticides. The Commission suggested last month that EU member states impose a two-year suspension on the use of three neonicotinoid insecticides, clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, as seed treatments, granule and spray applications on four crops that attract bees: sunflowers, oilseed rape, maize and cotton {Agrow No 657, p 7). The idea was put forward in response to a report from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) that identified risks to bees from the three active ingredients {Agrow No 656, p 6). Syngenta's request is based on the company's review of the EFSA report.
