The Indian government has sought the Supreme Court's permission to allow the manufacture of the insecticide/acaricide, endosulfan, from existing stocks of the intermediate, HCCP (hexachlorocyclopentadiene), and its export, use and sale in the country barring in two states, national media report. The Ministry of Agriculture has stated that incinerating existing stocks will cost over Rs 2,108.2 million ($38.1 million). The Court placed a ban on the production and sales of endosulfan last year (Agrow No 616, p 23).
