STUDIES ON EFFECT OF STAGGERED SOWING ON INCIDENCE OF THRIPS, THRIPS TABACI AND BULB YIELD OF ONION

Field experiments were conducted for two years during kharif 2003 and 2004 in a farmers field at Kalshettihalli village of Tarikere taluk (Chikmagalur district) to determine the appropriate sowing dates for the management of onion thrips, Thrips tabaci. The results revealed that the minimum thrips incidence of 7.41 in 5th August sowing and 5.36 numbers/plant in 15th August was noticed during 2003 and 2004, respectively followed by 25th August sowing (9.06 numbers/ plant) and 5th August sowing (5.73 numbers/plant) with higher bulb yields during 2003 and 2004, respectively. The maximum thrips infestation of 20.74 numbers/plant and 11.45 numbers/plant was recorded in 5th July sowing with poor bulb yield in both the years. Sowing between 5th to 25th August is advantageous for thrips control and high bulb yield.
