PHYTOSOCIOLOGICAL STUDY OF MACROPHYTES IN A FEW URBAN WATER BODIES OF NAGAON DISTRICT, ASSAM (INDIA)

摘要

Phytosociological study of macrophytes in a few ox bow beels of Nagaon District (Assam) has been made. 64 angiospermic, 6 pteridophytic and 2 algal species have been recorded. Ecological classification of different hydrophytic species was being discussed along with their phenological behaviour. IVl study revealed that Eichhomia crassipes is dominant in all the water bodies. Nagaon District, situated in the middle Assam (India) is interspersed with smaller perennial lentic water bodies, locally knownas "beels". There are as many as 379 numbers of beels in different parts of the District covering an area of 11295 Hectares of land (Baruah et al., 1998). They are nothing but some temporary or permanent freshwater habitats of shallow nature associated with hydric soil and characterized by the occurrence of vegetation, both of macrophytic and microphytic type and exposed to greater water level fluctuation due to heavy rains in summer and subsequent flood in the Brahmaputra floodplain. The beels were formed by land locking of channels by gradual siltation and changing of course of river Kolong, Kapili and Jamuna, the three prominent tributaries of Brahmaputra River that criss-cross the entire district. These beels play a significant role in maintainingthe water regime of the district.
