Important tips for successful cultivation of celery

Celery, popularly known as karnauli, is an important medicinal and spice crop. In Punjab, it is cultivated on an area of about 4,000 hectares. It is mainly grown in the districts of Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur and some parts of Patiala. Celery’sseed contains about two per cent essential oil, which is used in spices, perfumery and pharmaceutical industries. It is also grown for vegetable, seed oil and oleoresin. The leaves are a rich source of minerals like calcium, phosphorous, iron and vitamins for which it is consumed in salad. The dried, ripe seeds are also used as spice to flavour food and liquids; the seed is a stimulant and carminative and used as a nerve tonic in indigenous medicine systems. The seed and its products are in great demand in European countries. Farmers can earn good income from celery cultivation.. Higher yield of celery can be obtained by adopting the improved cultivation practices.
