Wheat is a rabi crop of Punjab, having productivity of 51.73 q/ha in 2018-19 due to fertile land, favourable climate, best irrigation facilities, fertilizer use, availability of high yielding varieties, plant protection measures and mechanization of wheat cultivation. Wheat requires low and mild temperature with less humidity during the early and grain filling stages, which results in higher tillering and proper ripening, and grain filling of the crop, respectively. Well drained, near neutral pH, fertile soils with moderate water holding capacity are best suitable for cultivation of wheat.
