Manage insect pests of winter vegetables

The importance of vegetables in human diet food can hardly be emphasized as vegetables provide adequate quantities of vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates and minerals. During the year 2015-16, the area under vegetable crops was 2.30 lakh hectares with aproduction of 45.48 lakh tonnes in Punjab but per capita per day availability of vegetables in the state is less than 200 g. To meet the demands of the population, there is a need to nearly double the production of vegetables. Even though, India is a large producer and consumer of vegetables, many of these are highly vulnerable to frequent attacks of pests and diseases. A well planned integrated management approach against insect pests could lead to higher yields and increased profits. For this, proper identification of pest, damage symptoms and application of management approaches are important. Symptoms of damage and management strategies of important insect pests of winter vegetables are discussed below.
