JS CHAUTALA: SETTING-UP AN EXAMPLE IN DIVERSIFIED FARMING

Sardar Jaswant Singh Chautala, a progressive farmer from Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, has set-up an example by practically reviving his Kinnow orchard with Trichoderma application.Crop diversification is generally viewed as a shift from traditionallygrown less remunerative crops to more remunerative crops. Diverse agro-climatic conditions of North-Western India are highly suitable for growing number of fruit crops like citrus, mango, guava, litchi, pear, etc. In Punjab, these crops have been identified as a potential alternative to conventional crops. Plantation of these high value crops may be given priority in diversification to reap the benefit of the emerging marketing scenario due to globalization and liberalization. However, still more number of farmers need to adopt diversification model through modern agricultural practices.
