In the recent years, the rice crop residue burning has become a serious national concern due to deteriorating air quality, particularly, in the rice-wheat cropping system in North-West India. In Punjab alone, more than 80 per cent of the total 18.7 MT rice straw produced annually is being burnt by the farmers within 3-4 weeks during October-November. So, there is an urgent need to adopt easy and farmer friendly approaches to utilize paddy straw in an eco-friendly way.
