PUNJAB BHARPOOR: A NEW VARIETY OF SMALL ROUND BRINJAL

Punjab Bharpoor, a new variety of brinjal, can be grown in rainy as well as spring seasons by transplanting the crop in July and February. It is resistant to bacterial wilt and gives 224 qlacre average fruit yield.Punjab Bharpoor is a new variety of small round group in brinjal. Its plants are medium-tall, compact, thorn less with green foliage. Its flowers are purple and borne in heavy clusters. Its fruit is small-oblong, shining, deep purple with green calyx andborne in clusters. It is resistant to bacterial wilt and gives 224 q/acre average fruit yield. It requires a long and warm growing season, but the crop may be damaged with frost and long chilling conditions. This variety can be grown in rainy as well asspring seasons by transplanting the crop in July and February. Nursery from 200 g seed is sufficient for planting crop in an acre. In November sown nursery, the seedlings must be protected against frost that become ready for transplanting in the first fortnight of February. Before transplanting the crop, 10 tonnes of well rotten farmyard manure along with 55 kg of urea, 155 kg of single super phosphate and 20 kg of muriate of potash are applied in an acre. The seedlings are planted in 67.5 cm apart rows at 45 cm distance. Another dose of 55 kg of urea per acre is applied after two fruit pickings. It is must to irrigate the crop immediatelyafter transplanting. Further irrigations depend on the type of soil, the season of cultivation and the type of weather. This variety bears in heavy clusters and regular picking of tender and fully developed fruits at weekly intervals is necessary for thedevelopment of later set fruits. For seed production, it should be isolated at least 200 metres away from other brinjal varieties and inspected thrice at vegetative, at flowering and fruiting stages as well as before harvesting of fruits to maintain the genetic purity of seed. Any off type and diseased plants should be removed. Only ripe and hard fruits are picked, crushed arid stored overnight. The mature seed is separated from pulp, washed with water, dried, packed and labelled.
