SML1827: A new yellow mosaic disease resistant variety of summer moong

摘要

Moong/mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) is an important short duration grain legume crop with wide adaptability and low input requirements. It can be grown during spring, summer and kharif seasons in Punjab state. It offers a good option for crop diversification. It is rich in protein and most easily digestible among all other legumes. There is a great scope to increase the area and production of mungbean in Punjab as it fits well in different crop rotations. Keeping above in view, strategic research has led to the development of a new variety of summer mungbean 'SML 1827' from an interspecific cross between mungbean (ML 881) and ricebean (RBL 35) followed by pedigree method of selection. In the new variety, resistance to yellow mosaic disease has been transferred from ricebean. It has been recommended and notified for general cultivation throughout the Punjab state.
