GROUNDWATER SITUATION AND VARIETAL PATTERN OF PADDY: ARE WE SENSITIVE TO OUR FUTURE!

If the present practice of groundwater extraction continues, the available groundwater resources of Punjab may exhaust in 20 to 25 years. Let us join hands to meet the most serious and complicated challenge of conserving water resources by its judicious use.What a paradox, the region of the Punj ab state, which is most acutely affected by groundwater depletion and leading a march towards desertification, is cultivating long duration varieties of paddy and consistently pleading for their early transplanting.This is happening in spite of the fact that this region is having higher productivity and income from crop cultivation as compared to others, having comparable area (about 90%)and wheat cultivation.
