Productivity and Profitability of Garlic (Allium sativum L.) under Different Levels of Drip Irrigation and Nutrient Management

A field experiment was conducted during 2010-11 and 2011-12 at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Assam to study the effect of drip irrigation and nutrient management on garlic with 4 water regime viz., drip irrigation at 0.75, 1.00 and 1.25 EpR (Evaporation Replenishment) and farmers' practice (rainfed) and 4 nutrient management treatments viz., 100% recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF), 75% RDF + Vermicompost (1 t/ha), 100% RDF + Vermicompost (1 t/ha) and Vermicompost (2 t/ha). Results showed that drip irrigation at 1.25 EpR being at par with 1.00 EpR recorded better growth, yield attributes and bulb yield of garlic. In regards to nutrient management, 1000/o RDF + vermicompost recorded significantly higher bulb yield. Total water use was highest under drip irrigation at 1.25 EpR, while rainfed crop recorded the lowest water used. Drip irrigation at 1.25 EpR recorded the highest gross (Rs 1086900.00) and net return (Rs 843250.25) and B:C ratio (4.46). It was closely followed by drip irrigation at 1.00 EpR (Rs 1076100, Rs 832705.25, 4.42). Under different nutrient management practices, 100% RDF + Vermicompost (1t/ha) recorded the highest gross- (Rs 1074750.00) and net (Rs 832669.87) return and B:C ratio (4.44).
