IT IS WELL established that the main threat to a stainless steel (SS) immersed in a sodium chloride aqueous solution is pitting corrosion, and that the size, shape, and distribution of corroded pits are parameters that need to be taken into account. Image processing is an effective technique for recording and describing the real characteristics of a corroded surface. Some researchers have begun to evaluate pitting corrosion behaviour by means of image processing [1-3].
