THE CORROSION characteristics of cobalt alloy, Co-35 Ni-20 Cr-10 Mo, with different cold worked conditions have been studied systematically under simulated body fluid conditions with a view to determining the suitable condition/treatment under which the alloy exhibits good corrosion resistance. Breakdown potential, pitting/crevice corrosion resistance, and the ability to form protective oxide scales were evaluated and compared. The advantages of as-annealed cobalt alloy over other cold-worked conditions are highlighted. A-C impedance measurements were also carried out in order to provide supportive evidence for the above results. The advantages of using titanium alloys over other materials are also mentioned. Finally, the importance of alloy selection for biomedical applications is emphasized.
