A type of commercial fumed silica modified by hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) was directly applied in the in situ miniemulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA) and perfluorooctyl methacrylate (PFOMA) to prepare the fumed silica/fluorinated acrylate latex. The particle size of fumed silica/fluorinated polyacrylate composite latex can be tailored in a range of 116.9 nm to 150.4 nm. The resultant composite latex coatings are highly transparent with the high transmittance (> 95%) and lower haze (< 4%). Moreover, the transparent composite latex coatings have durable hydrophobicity under either high humidity surroundings or strong acid or alkali environments. The incorporation of fumed silica into the composite coatings resulted in a dramatic increase of thermal stability.
