Continuing a series based on the ACA CIC Refresher Course manual that was recently updated by Dr Rob Francis for the ACA. As the thickness of the dry film significantly affects coating performance, its measurement is one of the most important readings that must be taken. Dry film thickness tests may be non-destructive or destructive. For obvious reasons, non-destructive are most popular and destructive methods should only be used when necessary. This chapter covers the non-destructive measurement of dry film thickness. The paint inspection gauge for destructive measurement of film thickness is covered later in this series.
