A field study was conducted during winter 2001 and 2002, in Uttar Pradesh, India, to evaluate the effects of different dosages of sulfur (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg/ha) with or without nitrogen (0 and 60 kg/ha) on the leaf area and chlorophyll content in rapeseed mustard (Brassica juncea). Nitrogen (as urea) and sulfur (as gypsum) were applied at the time of sowing of the cultivars Varuna, Pusa jai kisan, Pusa Bold and Pusa agrini. Results showed that 40 kg S + 60 kg N/ha and 60 kg S + 60 kg N/ha recorded the highest values for leaf area and chlorophyll content. Differences among cultivars were negligible.
