IT HAS been announced that Ford is recalling a number of its Taurus and Mercury Sable cars in the US in order to correct a problem that arises due to possible corrosion of the front coil springs due to road salt, among other causes (see Corrosion Report, page 1). Vehicle recalls of this type, in which manufacturers remedy possible design faults, are not uncommon, particularly in the US, and the country's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration publishes regular lists of issues and how it is planned for them to be corrected. In this case, Ford has pointed out that no injuries or fatalities have arisen as a result of the problem, and it is confident that the matter can be rapidly resolved.
