Protective Coatings

By the time you read this it the latest revision of AS/NZS 2312 should have finally been published. This Standard which first appeared in 1980, was revised in 1984 and 1994, and on March 1998 the first meeting was held of subcommittee MT/14/2 who carried out the latest revision. This was ably chaired by Dr Rob Francis who managed, eventually, to obtain a consensus view from the many different interest groups represented on the committee, regarding the systems to be included and their relative durability in different environments. The new title "Guide to the protection of structural steelwork against atmospheric corrosion by the use of protective coatings" indicates how the scope has been changed to include interior as well as exterior atmospheric environments. In addition the Standard now gives guidance on coatings for immersion, buried, hot chemical and other specialized non-atmospheric corrosive environments. However, the Standard still concentrates on coatings for various categories of exterior atmospheric environments. A new series of ISO Standards covering similar subjects (ISO 12944) were considered during review and a number of their features, such as corrosivity environments, have been adopted. However, these fit in quite closely with the corrosivity categories used in previous versions of the Standard.
