The Master Plumbers Association hosted Wellington Division's August Technical meeting on the evening of 7 August 2002. Those who attended enjoyed two excellent presentations by Division Committee members, Nick Laycock of Materials Performance Technologies, on the performance of stainless steel, and Barbara Webster of X2M Technology Ltd, on copper. Both speakers had studied under Professor Roger Newman (UMIST) who was quoted by Nick to put the performance of stainless into perspective: "Pitting is a common disease…owners of dishwashers know that pits grow at around 1 mm per day, whereas the passive surface dissolves at less than 1 mm per millennium." (Science, March 1994). The role of temperature, chloride concentration and grade of stainless in pitting were explained, with illustrated examples of different failures. There also included failures due to MIC, crevice corrosion and SCC.
