Effect of Nitrogen and Phosphorus on Growth and Yield of Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.)

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus; on growth and yield of. brinjal. The experiment was carried out at Horticultural Research Farm of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow during October 2009-10. Nitrogen and phosphorus each was applied at four and three doses (i.e. 0, 50, 100 and 150 Kg N and 0, 60 and 90 Kg P/ha), respectively.-The result revealed that these treatments had significant effect on growth and yield. Maximum plant height, number of branches per plant, leaf length per plant, leaf width per plant, number of fruits per plant, weight of one fruit per plant, total fruit yield per plot and yield per ha were recorded with the application of 150 Kg N/ha. Application of phosphorus at 90 Kg /ha recorded the maximum values of the above characters. Combined effect of nitrogen and phosphorus also showed significant influence on growth and yield parameters. Application of 150 Kg N in combination with 90 Kg P/ha proved to be optimum for improving growth and yield of brinjal, significantly.
