摘要

Phylllanthus amarus Schum and Thonn. is an important herbaceous species of medicinal value, used in the Ayurvedic formulation 'Chyawanprash'. Phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin are reported as therapeutically active constituents and serve as hepatoprotective agents. Callus culture of Phyllanthus amarus Schum and Thonn. was established from leaf explant on MS media containing auxins and cytokinins (0-22 mu M) individually and in combinations. The extensive callus proliferation was obtained on MS media fortified with BA (5 mu M) + 2,4-D (5 mu M) and Kin (2.5 mu M) + 2.4D (5.0 mu M). The phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin content was maximum in callus on MS media containing NAA (15 mu M) followed by IAA (10 mu M). The other combination observes the considerable amount of phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin in the range of 2.6-3.9 and 5.2-8.0 mg/gm respectively. The result showed the possibility of use of callus culture in production of phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin.
