Conference calls for GMO moratorium in EU

Delegates at a conference on restricting genetically modified organisms have called for an EU-wide moratorium on the authorisation and commercial planting of GM crops. The call was made in a final declaration adopted by 250 participants from 28 countries at the 5th European Conference of GMO-free Regions in Lucerne, Switzerland, in April. In the wake of six EU member states banning the planting of Monsanto's insect-resistant MON810 maize and the rapid increase in GMO-free regions in Europe, "there has never been a better moment for a moratorium than now," concludes the declaration.
