THE EFFECTS of the sulphur content of diesel-fuel oils burned with NaCl-containing atmospheric air on the corrosion characteristics of industrial furnaces were experimentally investigated in this study. Diesel-fuel oil A, which approximates to ASTM No.2 fuel oil, was atomized by the inlet air containing 1.5ppm NaCl and thereafter burned within the furnace for 10 hours. The sulphur quantities studied were of 0.3wt percent and 1.0wt percent, while metal sheets of SB 410 carbons steel were used as the specimens. It was found that, in these burning conditions, the composition of iron oxides appearing on the surface layer of the metal sheet is susceptible to melting. The corrosive components of sulphur and chlorine could thereafter swiftly diffuse into the interior of the matrix, leading to continuous corrosion failures. In addition, the corrosion rate and hardness of the specimens increased with increase in the sulphur content, the time of exposure to the burning gas, and the gas temperature. The simultaneous existence of sodium chloride and sulphur in the reactant mixture would increase the rate of corrosion of metallic materials.
