摘要

This paper covers the biosafety of genetically modified (GM) crops with reference to antibiotic resistance markers used in plant transformation. Notes are presented on the horizontal gene transfer of resistance markers from plants to bacteria, as well as the possible alternatives to the use of such markers. The allergic potential of foods derived from GM crops, including an assessment of the potential allergenicity of GM foods are presented. The status of transgenics in India as a solution to sustainable food and livelihood security is briefly discussed.
