Planting and Other Pursuits in Mysore 100 years ago

In the year 1855 a young Englishman, or he may have been a Scot, sailed for India to seek his fortune in the jungles of Mysore. The journey then included sections by land, across Egypt and the desert, while the last part of the trip from Bombay was bycountry sailing boat which took nine days to reach Mangalore. From there the young man was carried to his destination - Manjarabad - in a rough cot on the shoulders of relays of four men. Though coffee had been planted for very many years in Mysore there was no official record of it before 1822 and even when the young adventurer arrived and began to plant coffee in 1856 the local population asked him if he proposed to eat the berries or to what use it could be put. The name of the gentleman was R.H.Elliot. He spent 38 years planting in Mysore and published two books, the first in 1871 entitled "The Experiences of a Planter in the Jungles of Mysore' and the second, in 1894, was called 'Gold, Sport, and Coffee Planting in Mysore'.
