Recent Issues on Pesticide Residues and other ContaminantsTea

Tea, (Camallia sinensis (L.) O.Kuntze) in southern India is subjected to the attack of several acarine and insect pests, fungal pathogens and weeds. The usage of pesticides on tea plantations in India is largely governed by their maximum residue limit(MRL) in tea stipulated by the Government of India under Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The MRLs of pesticides on tea proposed by the European Union, Japan, EPA of USA and the Codex are also taken into consideration by the growerswhile selecting pesticides for application on tea. It is necessary to reduce the pesticide load on tea and to achieve this objective and several methods have been suggested.
