Effect of weather parameters on occurrence and development of stripe rust of wheat in central Punjab

The investigations were carried out to study the relationship between development and progress of stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici) with different weather parameters during crop seasons 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13. The Incubation period of pathogen varied from 10-17 days, 11-21 days and 9-19 days and latent period varied from 10-23 days, 11-21 days and 11-22 days in different months during 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 respectively. Correlation coefficients indicated that maximum andminimum temperature, morning and evening relative humidity, rainfall and sunshine hours influence the disease development and progress. Significant R2 values were observed when number of weather parameters were involved to develop a regression model forstripe rust forewarning. Step wise regression analysis indicated that temperature and relative humidity can be used as key indicators for yellow rust prediction. Generally disease progress was found to be slow during December, January and fast during February under field conditions.
