Recent developments in the use of benzoate low VOC coalescents in latex architectural paint

Although dibenzoate low VOC coalescents have been globally available for decades, benzoate technology continues to advance. In 2011 a new blend of three dibenzoates was introduced for use in coatings. The performance data indicated this blend of diethylene glycol dibenzoate (DEDB), dipropylene glycol dibenzoate (DPDB), and propylene glycol dibenzoate performed very well in paint, leading to its commercialization in 2012 as K-Flex~R 975P(975P). Also, a new product high in DEDB blended with DPDB was developed and commercialized as K-Flex 850S (850S). Although 975P and 850S are very low in VOC, an even lower VOC product - K-Flex 500P (500P, a blend of DEDB and DPDB) - was created for the coatings market. A new monobenzoate, 3-phenyl propyl benzoate (3PPB), was introduced for use in coatings as a coalescent.
