2001 Corn crops -- plant health review: an Indian summer saves the day.

Maize plant establishment was difficult during the 2001 cropping season, nevertheless, average yields were achieved. The main plant health problems were caused by weeds due to difficult pre- and post-emergence weed control conditions and re-growth associated with the spring and summer climates, respectively. Maize borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) and Sesamia nonagrioides infestations were minimal. On the other hand, attention should be paid to: the development of the Agriotes sordidus wireworm; moths oncertain plots in Aquitaine, France which use simplified cultivation methods; the constant threat posed by smut (caused by Sphacelotheca reiliana); and the sporadic harmful outbreaks of leaf blight (caused by Helminthosporium turcicum [Setosphaeria turcica]) in Alsace, France.
