Moving on to pests, codling moth was better controlled than in the past, thanks to a large extent to the development of mating disruption techniques. Elsewhere,woolly apple aphid continues to cause problems in the Val-ae-Loire region (where it is resistant to vamidothion) and is also enjoying a resurgence in the Midi-Pyrenees and in several orchards of some but attention must be paid to the phenomenon of resistance to ITEM-type acaricides. The usefulness of predatory mites must not be overlooked either. Attention is also drawn to ceports of a number of secondary pests which should be kept under close observation (particularly in orchards in which mating disruption is practised).
